Senate Minority Leader Martin Nesbitt
Senate Minority Leader Martin Nesbitt represents the state's 49th Senate District, which covers Buncombe County. Nesbitt first came to the General Assembly in 1979 when he was appointed to fill the unexpired term of his mother Mary Cordell Nesbitt in the State House. He served 11 terms there before being appointed in 2004 to serve in the State Senate. He has been on the forefront of many legislative issues including mental health reform, economic recovery, health care, and education.

House Minority Leader Joe Hackney
House Minority Leader Joe Hackney represents the state's 54th House District, including constituents in Chatham, Orange, and Moore counties. A farmer and attorney from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Hackney is currently serving in his sixteenth term in the state House of Representatives. He served as House Speaker from 2007 to 2011 and was recently elected House Minority Leader.
